In May the College announced that the ongoing "Reaching the World: A Campaign for Colby" capital campaign had exceeded its original goal of $235 million and leaders set a new mark, $370 million.

"As we speak today, August 30th, with three years remaining in the campaign, we have raised $283,000,000 dollars or 120 percent of our original goal! To say that we are well on our way to reaching the new goal of $370,000,000 is an understatement!" Chairman of the Board of Trustees Joe Boulos '68 said in a recent e-mail. The newest figures now show the current total at $286 million, or 77.3 percent of the ultimate goal.

According to Vice President for College Relations Richard Ammons, the motivation behind increasing the goal was "a wonderful gift" that focused a lot of attention on Colby's strengths and mission. This gift was from Trustee Paula and Life Overseer Peter Lunder in the form of artwork and an endowment to preserve the artwork valued at over $100 million. (See feature article next week)

"The incredible gift from the Lunders has done so much for Colby," Trustee and Co-Chairman of the Campaign Bob Diamond '73 said. "A campaign goal beyond anything we ever thought possible for Colby or for any Maine College, the largest and most significant gift ever in our history at Colby and for Maine, an art collection for Colby College which puts our museum in a very special place," he said.

Ammons said the College decided to increase the goal in order to address existing goals, including three more building projects (an addition to the Colby College Art Museum, a classroom on the Colby Green and a performing arts center in the Runnals parking lots) as well as endowment needs. He said the College is "continuing to talk to people about these projects and hoping to generate interest." He said the projects would be underway before June 2010, the end of the capital campaign, adding, "when the bookstore is done, we will turn to one of those three [building projects]."

Since the campaign's launch in October 2005, events have been held in Waterville, ME, New York, NY, London, England, Boston, MA and other cities, including most recently an event in Burlington, VT this summer. This fall the campaign will hold events in Denver, CO, Hartford, CT and Providence, RI. Additionally, the Pulver Pavilion will be dedicated in October on campus.

"People have been very enthusiastic about the campaign, it's been a great way to get to know family and alumni around the country," Ammons said.

The most recently completed campaign project is the Pulver Pavilion addition to Cotter Union (See feature article, pages 6-7).
