The women's tennis team opened their spring season this past Sunday at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The women were 1-1 in the fall in dual matches, with a shutout win against the University of Southern Maine and a shutout loss against Maine rival Bowdoin College. The captains this year are seniors Tracy Nale and Allison Dunn.
At MIT the women did not have their best day, losing all their matches in the 9-0 loss. First-year Audrey Jacobsen played the closest singles match, losing 6-4, 7-6 (4) at the sixth position. The second doubles squad barely lost in a close 9-7 battle. The duo is comprised of Ginny Raho '07 and Nicole Veilleux '09. This was their first and only match before heading to California with the men's team for a spring break training trip.
The men's side, captained this year by Tom Gildersleeve '07 and Zach Schuman '08, will play matches against the California Institute of Technology, Azusa Pacific University, and the University of Redlands. Instead of Cal Tech, the women will cross rackets with the Pomona College squad. Hopefully the teams will have a little time for sun and fun; rumors of surfing and celeb watching at Laguna Beach are already making their way around campus.
Upon returning from Cali the men and women will play their first home match against Trinity College on April 1st, while most students will still be on break. The women will also play at Tufts University on the 31st of March. The men already played Tufts last week, winning the bout 6-3 as a team.
